I read in May’s edition of Trail magazine that you can now register with a 999 text service. According to the service, EmergencySMS was not designed for hill walkers – it’s for hearing and speech-impaired people. However the service is recommending everyone register with it. A text can often go through rather than a phone call in poor reception areas. Registration takes about 10 minutes to complete. Sounds like a good idea, I have my Spot Messenger 2 on my walks for emergencies ( a further report on this soon).
